The One-Exit Kidney

I’m keeping the beat
Mo
You've been keeping the SAME beat for forty-five minutes, Carmy, and I still love you, but my hi-hat arm is filing a formal complaint.
Carmy
Ha ha! And my Gibson is taking you to court for shredding so hard!
Mo
Sue away, counselor — but the judge is gonna take one look at this sweat-soaked stage at Lou's Basement and rule that a man's gotta be allowed a bathroom break every third song, Carmy. My dad always said a band that never stops to breathe is a band that's about to fall apart, and I watched his do exactly that.
Carmy
And my dad always said a band that stops when they’re in a flow state falls apart, and I watched his to exactly that.
Mo
Fell apart HOW, Carmy — mid-solo, or did he just play one groove for eleven years straight until his own bandmates started calling him "the fixture"? Because that's a very different funeral, and I need to know which one my hi-hat arm is headed for.
Carmy
I want this band to go places, Mo! And we will if you find your flow too and slam that hi-hat and hold in your pee.
Mo
Places! Great, I love places, Carmy, but you're describing a destination, and I am describing a bladder, and only one of those is currently at ninety percent capacity three songs deep at Lou's! My dad's drummer held it in for a whole tour once — you know what he found in his kidneys after? A tiny, perfectly formed cymbal. I am not making that face on this stage.
Carmy
A cymbal? Cool! We can use more instruments. I’m nailing this solo. I’m on cloud nine.
Mo
Cloud nine, Carmy, is exactly where you were when my uncle's tuba player passed out mid-anthem and rolled off the stage into the merch table — that is a documented cloud nine casualty! And no, we can't "use" the cymbal, it comes out through the same door the pee wants to come out of, that's the whole tragedy, that's a one-exit kidney!
A NOTE FROM THE BOOTH
Carmy, you planted a real belief and fought for it — "a band that stops when they're in a flow state falls apart" mirrored Mo's dad line perfectly and gave the argument actual stakes instead of just bouncing jokes back. You also stayed consistent in your elation the whole scene. Next time, let that belief cost you something or bend a little under Mo's pressure — when he brings up the cymbal-kidney, don't just say "cool," let it actually rattle your flow state for a second before you recommit.
Like the shape of this one? Mo will happily go again.RUN THIS ONE WITH MO
